The Build Droid is used to build things. When assigned to the Capitol, he speeds up the production of new buildings of all sorts. Build droids can also be assigned to the Factory to speed the production of more droids, or to the Shipyard to speed the production of ships and defenses. Other than the human Builder, they are the only type of worker that can be assigned to these locations. You are allowed one worker for a level 0 Capitol/Factory/Shipyard, and then another 1 worker for every 3 levels. So for instance a level 3 Capitol can have 2 workers, a level 6 can have 3, and so on.
Each Build Droid increases the speed at which you can build by 2%. Human Builders provide a 4% speed boost.

Perhaps if Player started with a reasonably sized stockpile of various types of droids [mostly Mine and Build Droids, you could include a couple Lab Droids if you were feeling particularly generous] as part of the initial supplies with the Homeworld. Then Droids could be distributed before buildings began to be built to shorten the build times for the first levels of buildings effectively jumpstarting the build process? At least for the first planet.
In Most of the books I've read about the colonization of new planets. The Colony ship first serves as Home for the new colonists while they Terraform the planet, Then Colonists begin Cannibalizing portions of the Ship for the building material to construct homes and factories and other equipment they'll need, and transport said materials to the surface of the new world. So it doesn't seem to far fetched, that a few Droids, or parts to construct said Droids would be included in the supplies aboard the Colony Ship?
In all of the versions of "The Old Game" that I've played in,You could not place a Droid until you'd Built The 1st level of the building where you used the Droids. Then after the completion of the 3rd level of each building you could add a 2nd Droid. Then every third level after allowed you to add another Droid of the appropriate type. I was never in a position where there was an option to install a droid until the 1st building level was built.
I don't know if this was due to the fact that the first buildings were normally built before building Droids was possible. I never tried sending the (charon) for transporting a ship full of droids with the Colony Ship to create colony. Because of the need to destroy multiple colonies to get one that was worth "Keeping" would mean that the Ship full of Droids would need to be returned to their starting point or be destroyed and wasted if your colony wasn't of a suitable field count?
