SFC2 runs its game worlds as separate universes. Each universe has its own map, its own players, its own alliances and its own leaderboard, and nothing crosses from one to another. For how the map inside a universe is laid out, see Starfleet Universe.
Your account can hold one commander in every universe that is open. Those commanders are completely independent: different name, different planets, different research, different credits.
Universes so far
| Universe | Opened | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Universe 1 | April 2026 | Live |
| Beta Universe | March 2026 | Archived |
| Alpha Universe | February 2026 | Archived |
Alpha and Beta were the two test universes that ran while the game was being built. Both are closed now. Universe 1 opened in April 2026 and is where everyone plays.
Universe 1 is three galaxies of 300 solar systems each, which works out to 13,500 planet slots. More galaxies are opened when the map fills up, so the universe grows with the player base.
The Universes page
The universe name sits at the top left of every page in the game. Click it and you land on the Universes page, which lists every universe you already play plus any that are open to join.
Each row shows the universe, your commander name there, and your Galactic Net Worth. That is everything that commander owns added up in ore, crystal and hydrogen: resources on hand, buildings, research, ships, defenses and anything in transit. Play drops you straight onto that commander's homeworld.
Joining a universe
Signing up puts you into the newest open universe right away. You pick your commander name on the sign up form and your homeworld is built the moment you join. You start with 10,000 credits.
If another universe is open and you are not in it yet, the Universes page shows a Join button next to it. It asks for a commander name for that universe: 2 to 20 characters, letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens and underscores only, and it has to be free in that universe. You get a fresh homeworld there and start from nothing. Nothing carries over from your other commanders.
When a new universe has a launch date set, an Upcoming Events box appears at the top of the Universes page counting down to it.
What is separate and what is shared
Nearly everything in the game is tied to one universe:
- Commander name, planets, moons and resources
- Buildings, research, ships and defenses
- Credits, including credits bought in the Store
- Alliance membership and alliance chat, see Community
- Messages and your buddy list
- Rank on the Leaders boards
- Vacation mode, diplomacy mode and newbie protection
Only a few things belong to the account rather than to a commander:
- Your email address and password
- The public forums and this wiki
- Support tickets
Vacation mode shows the split well. Turning it on locks that one commander out until you turn it off, and your commanders in other universes carry on as normal.
Archived universes
When a universe is retired it gets archived. Nothing is deleted. Your planets, fleets and research stay exactly as you left them and you can still open the universe and look around, but it is read-only. A banner sits across the top and anything that would change the game is blocked.
On the Universes page an archived universe carries an Archived tag and the Play button becomes View. Archived universes do not take new players, and if you never had a commander in one it does not appear in your list at all.
When Universe 1 opened, anyone who had bought credits in Alpha or Beta got those credits back on their new Universe 1 commander the first time they joined. That was a one off for the launch.
Coming from the old game
The original Starfleet Commander ran more than a dozen universes with different rules in each, names like Extreme, Nova, Conquest and Hired Guns. SFC2 does not work that way. There is one set of rules, and a universe is simply a separate world to play it in.
